**1. Personal Conduct**

Respect for staff and other inmates: Inmates must follow the directives of correctional officers and show respect toward fellow inmates. Threats, harassment, or violence against others can result in punishment.

No weapons: Possession of any form of weapon, or anything that can be used as a weapon, is strictly forbidden.

No gang activity: Gangs and their activities (including recruitment, hand signs, and symbols) are prohibited.

**2. Daily Routines**

Work assignments: Inmates are often required to participate in assigned work tasks, which can include kitchen duty, cleaning, maintenance, or manufacturing jobs, depending on the facility.

Scheduled activities: Inmates must adhere to the schedule for meals, recreation, work, and lights-out times. Unexcused absence from these activities can lead to disciplinary action.

**3. Communication**

Mail and phone calls: Inmates are allowed to send and receive mail and make phone calls, but these communications are monitored. There are restrictions on the number of calls and letters, and inmates are prohibited from contacting certain individuals, such as victims of their crimes.

Visits: Inmates can receive visitors under strict supervision. There are usually limits on the number of visitors and visiting hours, and all visits must be pre-approved. Physical contact is often restricted or limited.

**4. Contraband**

No drugs, alcohol, or unauthorized items: Possession of contraband, including drugs, alcohol, cell phones, or any items not issued by the prison, is forbidden. Smuggling contraband can result in solitary confinement, loss of privileges, or extended sentences.

Searches: Inmates and their cells are subject to random searches to ensure compliance with contraband rules.

**5. Dress Code**

Uniforms: Inmates are required to wear prison-issued clothing and maintain the standard dress code at all times. Altering or misusing the uniform can lead to penalties.

**6. Healthcare and Hygiene**

Access to healthcare: Inmates have the right to receive medical care, though the availability and quality of care can vary. Hygiene rules are also enforced, requiring inmates to maintain personal cleanliness.

Clean living spaces: Inmates must keep their cells clean and organized. Failure to do so can result in disciplinary action.

**7. Education and Rehabilitation**

Programs: Many prisons offer educational, vocational, and rehabilitation programs to inmates. Participation is often encouraged or mandated, especially for those who are nearing release.

Good behaviour credits: Inmates who participate in programs and exhibit good behaviour can earn credits that may reduce their sentences.

**8. Disciplinary Procedures**

Violations: Inmates who break rules may face disciplinary actions such as solitary confinement, loss of privileges (e.g., reduced visitation, no recreation time), or transfer to a higher-security facility.

Inmate hearings: Serious violations may require formal hearings where evidence is presented, and sanctions are determined based on the severity of the offense.

**9. Grievance and Appeals**

Right to file grievances: Inmates have the right to file grievances if they believe they are being mistreated or if their rights are being violated. There is usually an appeals process for disciplinary actions.

These rules are designed to maintain order within the institution and ensure the safety of staff, inmates, and the public. Penalties for violations range from loss of privileges to additional legal charges or extended sentences, depending on the nature of the offense.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://doj.secondliferp.com/legislation/doj-legislation/department-of-justice-public-legislation/bolingbroke-penitentiary-legislation-act-oct-2025.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
